Mors Subita: Sound of spite

14/06/10  ||  Trauma

So we’re presented here with some Finnish death metal with melodic touches throughout. Eleventy billion points for originality. Yes, that was sarcasm, but don’t take it quite as negatively as I might make it sound. There is something to this music that will grab you. It might grab you gently on the shoulder and politely ask, “Could you please do me the service of listening to these tunes, kind sir?”; grab you by the neck and say, “Listen to this and like it, or I’ll cut you!”; grab you by the balls and say, “Love me like you love a good spanking, you naughty boy, you.”

For me, it’s more of the first with slight tendencies toward the latter. Take the first track. It begins quite mundanely pedestrian with a wholly uninteresting riff, kinda not even indicative as to what this is going to really sound like once everything finally picks up. I was not impressed, and then we get into the meaty riffs with a bit of overlayed melody and the songs hits its high mark and doesn’t really falter from there. The vocals seem grating at first but in the end they don’t ever really feel out of place here and you get used to them faster than you expect. In the end it’s those meaty rib-eye riffs throughout the tune that keep you there and don’t leave a certain annoying taste in your mouth afterwards like falafel.

From there, the rest of tunes continue the same kind of trend, starting with some heavy, tough (which may or may not be typical/nothing to write home about) riffs before fully developing into the tune they were meant to be. The fourth track has got one of the better opening riffs of the demo and enters its melodies very well.

As far as similarities to other bands, I myself hear mid-period Dark Tranquillity and In Flames in these guys. Go ahead and call me out on that, but that’s what comes to my mind. It suits me just fine when in the right mood.

Overall, two good tunes (“Glance of fear”, “Addiction queen”) and three at-best alright tunes makes for a respectable enough score. I’d like to hear what they can push out in terms of a full-length, myself. If you’re at all interesting in death metal with a bit of the melodic side check out Mocha Sorbet.
